Did you know that bar and restaurant employees are 50 percent more likely than the general population to develop lung cancer, largely because many of them are exposed to secondhand smoke on the job?
These deaths occur because tobacco users are not the only ones who breathe smoke—all the people around them inhale it too. Unfortunately, non-smoking and ventilated public spaces cannot filter or circulate air at the rate necessary to eliminate secondhand smoke. That is why we are developing BREATHE, Bar and Restaurant Employees Advocating Together for a Healthy Environment.
BREATHE is being started in Michigan by the Campaign for Smokefree Air (CSA), a grassroots coalition of statewide groups who support eliminating secondhand smoke dangers in workplaces, restaurants and bars.
LATEST NEWS
In April, CSA supported legislation introduced in the Michigan Legislature to ensure smokefree working environments in all workplaces, including restaurants and bars.
Many people don't remember that restaurants and bars are workplaces for others. That's why we need you to get involved and remind state lawmakers that you deserve protections from secondhand smoke at your restaurant and bar too.
By signing up to be a member of BREATHE, you will receive up-to-date information on how to get involved in passing House Bills 4624 and 4625 and Senate Bills 394 and 395.
You have a voice in this debate—an important voice. By becoming a member and voice for BREATHE, you can help us become one step closer to Make MI Air Smokefree.
